The Marie Antoinette

Rectangular in shape, measuring 56 centimeters (22 inches) in length by 32 centimeters (12 ½ inches) in width, this luxurious creation is inspired by the “à la Polonaise” style bed, which was popular at the Court of Marie Antoinette during the reign of Louis XVI.

One of the more unique elements of its design is the canopy (baldaquin), which lies on four finely fluted columns. It is comprised of three parts: the seat along with its cushion, the headboard, which is sculpted as a part of the bed frame, and upholstered with silk, and topped with a pleated valence.

The balustrade is made of wrought iron, and topped with a turned ornamental spool, in which holds delicate feathers.

The construction of the supporting frame illustrates the skill and know how of the traditional craftsman. The frame is built from wood, finished with an aged patina. Hemp banding is woven into a web, providing support for the upholstered bedding. A removable cotton slip cover, sewn with invisible stitching, facilitates cleaning.

The design of the bed frame allows the rectangular cushion to fit perfectly into the frame. Two fringed embroidered bands line the frame, providing a visual balance to the canopy. All upholstery is removable, to facilitate cleaning.

Four soft curtains cascade along the wrought iron balustrade, forming a canopy above the bed. They are lined with a delicate checked silk fabric. As they are attached with hidden Velcro strips, they can be easily removed for washing.

This beautiful creation is the harmonious marriage of traditional craftsmanship, and fastidious attention to details. The finest silk fabrics are used, featuring hand embroidered floral patterns, which are also reflected in the silk lining. The final touch of the upholsterer craftsman is the embroidered medallion, realized in an intense green.
